To Understand Milling Cutters, You Must First Understand Milling

When optimizing the milling effect, the blade of the milling cutter is another important factor. It is an advantage if more than one blade is involved in cutting at the same time during any milling, but it is a disadvantage if too many blades are involved in cutting at the same time. It is impossible for one cutting edge to cut at the same time. The required power is related to the number of cutting edges participating in the cutting. The position of the milling cutter relative to the workpiece plays an important role in the chip formation process, cutting edge load and machining results. In face milling, if you use a milling cutter that is approximately 30% larger than the cutting width and position the cutter close to the center of the workpiece, the chip thickness will not change much. The chip thickness when cutting in is slightly thinner than when cutting in the center.
In order to ensure that a sufficiently high average chip thickness/feed per tooth is used, the number of milling cutter teeth suitable for the operation must be correctly determined. The pitch of a milling cutter is the distance between the effective cutting edges. Milling cutters can be divided into 3 types based on this value - dense tooth milling cutters, sparse tooth milling cutters, and extra dense tooth milling cutters.
Related to the chip thickness of milling is the leading angle of the face milling cutter. The leading angle is the angle between the main cutting edge of the blade and the workpiece surface. There are mainly 45 degrees, 90 degrees and circular blades. The cutting force The direction change will change greatly with the different main angle: a milling cutter with a main angle of 90 degrees mainly produces radial force, acting in the feed direction, which means that the surface being processed will not bear excessive pressure, which is more reliable for milling workpieces with weak structures.
The radial cutting force and axial cutting force of a milling cutter with a main angle of 45 degrees are roughly equal, so the pressure generated is relatively balanced and the power requirements for the machine tool are relatively low. It is especially suitable for milling short-chip materials that produce chipping chips.
