Roughing Gouge Turning

Rough chisel for wood turning is used to process logs into round shapes. This is usually the first tool you use to turn square lumber into round rods. Made of CR12 steel with ergonomically designed Grade A beech handle and brass ferrule.

When you turn it with a roughing chisel, start by striking each of the 4 edges of the square piece of wood and then slowly work your way down to the round turning blank. There's a little knocking sound every time the tool and wood meet. If the tool is cutting "air" instead of wood, the tool will tend to move.

When you move the tool into the cutting position, you first want to remove the dust rather than shave it. The cutting edge is now just in contact with the wood. Tilt the tool in the direction you want to move it and lift the handle slightly. Now you should have your shavings and be able to make nice cuts with your rough cutting chisel. Roughing chisels, spindle roughing chisels, transform wood from "rough" to rounded.

Moving from right to left, the main hand pushes the tool through the tool holder. Remember not to over-grip the tool. If your hands are tense, you're going to get into trouble. Stop cutting, relax your hands, and think about the cut you want to make and how you should do it. It is best to start by moving the roughing chisel from the center of the work to the outer edge. Once you get used to your tools, you can come in from the outside because your hands will know what they're doing. This does take some time.

Turning the blank into a round shape is fun and easy. If you happen to get stuck, it's usually nothing too serious and you'll keep turning until you overcome the damage caused by the jam.
